A closed Catholic Church in Bristol Township has been sold to a Muslim cultural society.The former Immaculate Conception B.V.M. Catholic Church, on Emilie Road, was sold for $1,775,000 last Friday to the United American Muslim Society of Brooklyn.
The group is the parent corporation for the Turkish American Muslim Cultural Association on Levittown Parkway in Bristol Township, according to the story.
The announcement of the sale made during weekend masses was “positively received by parishioners,” Archdiocese of Philadelphia spokesman Ken Gavin told LevittownNow.com.
The new owners have been present on the Levittown Parkway since 1991, said Gavin.
"They are widely known as people of faith, family, prayer and education in the moral life for their children and the families of Bristol Township,” Gavin said.
The church, which closed on Jan. 1, was merged with the Queen of the Universe Parish in 2014.
The money from the sale of the property will go to pay down a debt of $704, 997 for Immaculate Conception and $258,042 for Queen of the Universe.
Remaining funds will go to parish savings, Gavin said.
